Country Shows: Boots, Wellies or Smart Shoes? What Makes Good Sense for All-Day Comfort in Wet and Dry Conditions
BY eleven o’clock, when the day is warming up at an agricultural show or a similar event, the weaknesses of your footwear are often revealed. They seemed like they would work at the start of the day but now they’re rubbing, sliding over wet grass or just too hot. There’s nothing quite as gruelling as an agricultural show or a game fair which can last all day outside. It can involve livestock displays, demonstrations, exhibitors’ stalls and hospitality events taking place across areas of grass, paths and temporary surfaces.
Country footwear is always going to be about finding something that fits the surface, conditions, expected distances covered and the level of formality required. This article sticks firmly to that theme. Our focus here is to narrow down the decision to a simple three-way split: boots, wellies or shoes?
The quick answer. In terms of a majority of attendees, the safest choice overall is a good quality, waterproof leather Chelsea boot or country boot with a defined rubber sole, plenty of cushioning and enough space for whatever sock you plan to wear. If you want a more serious walking boot for longer journeys on uneven terrain, if you know there will be lots of water or muddy patches, then go for wellies. Only opt for smart shoes if you’re sure the ground will be completely firm and dry underfoot and you don’t plan on being anywhere near as active for as long.
Ground, weather, distance and formality
The weather forecast doesn’t tell you everything. Ground that’s hard after a prolonged period of rain can still be slippery at entrance and exit points and parking bays. Conversely, an insulated wellie can feel almost unbearable when you step onto firm, hot ground.
There are four questions you should ask yourself:

Boots, wellies and smart shoes: which type works best?
Ankle and Chelsea-style boots: the most versatile option
If you think you’ll spend the majority of time at a mix of activities during a show day (walking round stands etc.) then a high-quality leather Chelsea-style ankle boot could be your top choice. They sit somewhere in the spectrum between proper walking boots and smarter shoes. You can wear them with both trousers and with your dressier ‘polished’ separates. They are also slightly less bulky than taller boots or wellies. Make sure they have a clearly visible rubber sole, that they provide adequate cushioning beneath your foot and that your heel feels securely fastened.
The men’s Ariat Wexford Chelsea Boot features full grain waterproof leather and includes Waterproof Pro construction along with ATS technology support system. The rubber outsole provides excellent grip. The ladies version, Ariat Wexford Waterproof Chelsea Boot, offers additional comfort features including a gel cushioned footbed and heel stabiliser. Together these demonstrate how effective waterproof footwear combined with walking support does not necessarily equate to large field-style boots.
You are likely to get less ankle support and grip from a fashionable Chelsea boot compared to a walking boot. Examine the bottom of your footwear; don’t think that just because you’ve invested in a fashionable style that it will handle wet grass.

Walking boots: pick functionality for long days and serious miles
Use a walking boot if you need to walk for long periods on rough terrain such as a big farm site, uneven trackways, a long way from the car park etc. They are not as stylish but give better quality adjustability (lace), grip, cushioning and ankle support as time goes by.
The Meindl Peru GTX is a technical, 3-season men’s boot made from waxed nubuck leather with Gore-Tex, an Air-Active SoftStep footbed, and a shock-absorbent rubber sole with PU wedge. The women’s equivalent, the Meindl Peru Lady GTX, has a slightly lower cut around the ankle and similar technology to the men’s model. Both may be a little much for most sites, but they make sense if stability is your priority.

High leather country boots: polished performance for wet grass
If longer periods of exposure to wet grass are on the cards, but you want to look more polished than a walking boot or wellie, then high leather country boots are worth considering. These tend to work best on very damp, rather than extremely muddy, surfaces.
A good example of what to look for in a country boot is the Dubarry Galway Boot. This includes DryFast-DrySoft leather, Gore-Tex waterproof and breathable lining, and a PU/rubber sole. There is also the added benefit of having plenty of room to push your foot in, tying high up the leg to ensure you have a secure, unpinched calf fit.
On really sunny days these types of boots can feel quite hot. On very hard surfaces or where there is no cushioning underfoot, it might be preferable to wear a supportive ankle boot.

Wellingtons (wellies): for real mud and deep puddles
Only use wellies when you know you will encounter puddles, mud, churned gateways, areas containing animals or large puddled parking fields. In normal circumstances, using wellies on dry ground can quickly become tiresome due to the weight of the boot.
Don’t settle for just waterproof; look for other factors to consider when buying a show-day wellie. A good show-day wellie should include all of the following qualities:

Cushioning underfoot

In July, neoprene-lined wellies are usually far too heavy. Leave a clean and lightweight alternative in your car if you suspect the weather may improve, so that you are not forced into wearing one pair to cover all eventualities.

Leather shoes and loafers: only for dry, firm grounds and shorter events
Loafers (shoe, driving shoe etc.) are ideal for short hospitality-led visits on dry, firm showgrounds. Consider purchasing shoes or loafers with some form of padding in the insoles and either a rubber or nubbed outsole instead of a thin, smooth leather sole.
Morning dew can make grassy areas slippery, even when there has been no rain. Suede, pale, or other sensitive finish shoes will be ruined immediately upon entering a muddy area. When shopping the R.M. Williams, Fairfax & Favor, Ariat or Dubarry shoe lines, check out the sole of the shoe along with the cushioning and think about how far you will have to walk. Smart doesn’t have to mean fragile.

Fit checks for men and women
First things first: commonalities take priority. Secure heel hold, enough toe room, good arch support, proper flexibility and no pressure points. Fit each shoe with the type of sock you plan to wear with it (a thicker sock can turn a sloppy-fitting Chelsea boot into a snug one; a thinner sock in a large wellie can lead to blisters).
Men’s fit
Chelsea boots do look nice under chino trousers or country trousers, but they won’t last long if they don’t have some kind of traction. Make sure the top part of the boot (instep) isn’t too tight when you bend your foot forward, and that the heel does not lift when walking uphill. Use laces to tighten walking boots so you can control where your heel goes without limiting its movement.
Women’s fit
More important than just the overall length of the heel: the more stable the heel is, the better it will perform. A small block heel can function adequately on hard surfaces but will struggle on grass. Be sure to check for sufficient calf room in high-top boots and collar rubbing in ankle boots. No matter what type of trousers or skirt you’re wearing with your shoes, they need to have toe room, cushioning and a sole that is designed for walking.
Breaking in your footwear before show day
Use new footwear on short walks around the house (or equivalent terrain) several times prior to a full show-day outing - using the same socks and insoles. Gradually increase the distance you walk. While breaking in can help ‘soften’ a well-suited boot, it cannot help with an incorrect size or shape.

The final choice
The right footwear is one of the most important things to decide before attending a country show. There are many different types of footwear to choose from. A waterproof Chelsea or ankle boot with a good level of tread is likely your best option, as this is the most versatile. Depending on how far you plan to walk and whether you’ll have to traverse uneven terrain, you can move up to a walking boot. If you need a lot of coverage to protect against wet grass, go for a tall country boot. For rainy or muddy days, use a supportive welly. For any occasion where the ground is consistently dry, wear shoes.

Do I need wellies for a country show?
Wellies are ideal for events where it's going to rain continuously - requiring full rubber protection. However, for lighter forms of dampness, a waterproof leather boot would provide a cooler, more comfortable and more supportive option.

Trainers are fine if there is no mud around the entrances or the grass is dry, firm and hard. Also, leave some waterproof trainers in the car just in case rain appears.
