ORIGINS OF ESTATE TWEED

Estate tweeds are an important part of Scottish history, with their origin entrenched in the early 18th Century, when thousands of fiercely proud Scottish Highlanders dressed in clan tartans took part in the 1746 Battle of Culloden. The battle, which ended in defeat for the Highland warriors, led to Royal legislation banning Scottish men from wearing tartan and other Highland dress.

Over one hundred years later, the clan had dissolved, with new sportsmen taking over their lands in pursuit of the Highland’s incredible surroundings. These new estate owners wished to represent themselves and their workers with a new, alternative form of Highland dress, leading to the birth of estate tailoring and new estate tweed patterns.

Today, these traditional garments are still worn proudly by estate employees, gamekeepers, and stalkers across England and Scotland. Brocklehursts is proud to continue this legacy with our bespoke estate tailoring service.

WHAT IS AN ESTATE TWEED?

Estate tweeds feature an estate’s exclusive pattern that only members of that estate are allowed to wear. Some have been handed down through generations. However, new patterns are continuously developed as estates are split or sold.

Though their primary purpose is to unite estate members, Estate tweeds are also designed to provide practical clothing for outdoor pursuits. They historically feature the colours and textures of an estate’s surrounding landscape, protecting the wearer against the elements while providing camouflage.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TARTANS AND TWEEDS?

Tartans and tweeds have long been used to identify groups of people in Scotland. However, while tartans traditionally identify members of the same family, estate tweeds are rooted in location, uniting estate members who live and work alongside one another regardless of their relationship or descent.
