What is the origin of trousers?

Throughout the world, trousers have been worn since ancient times, with the oldest known trousers dating back to China between the thirteenth and tenth centuries BC. These were found at the Yanghai cemetery in Turpan, China, and featured wool material, straight legs and wide crotches, likely made for horseback riding.

Central Europeans created trousers with natural materials like leather and fur held up by belts, advancing the original trouser-like constructions, which were made from short-lived materials like fig leaves and cloth.

Though different periods and cultures invented various trouser-like garments, the trousers that most resemble the garments we know and love today are thought to have been created to protect against cold weather and dangerous animals and for long horseback trips.

It is even thought that those who wore trousers into battle had an advantage over those who wore robes on horseback, leading civilisations worldwide to adopt these garments into their wardrobes and culture.

When were trousers invented?

It is hard to pinpoint the exact moment trousers were invented. However, archaeological discoveries provide evidence of early trouser-like garments dating back around 3,000 years. These ancient trousers were typically loose-fitting and made from natural fibres.

With this in mind, while the exact moment trousers were invented remains somewhat elusive, it's clear that trousers have a long history originating from the practical needs of ancient cultures.

Who was the first to wear trousers?

Historical research suggests that Central Asian societies relying heavily on horseback riding were the first to invent trousers.

Cultures in the region required a flexible garment that provided protection against harsh climates and on long horseback journeys, and it was these practical requirements that led to the invention and subsequent widespread adoption of trousers worldwide.

What did people wear before trousers?

Before the trousers we know and love today, people in different regions and periods wore various lower-body coverings depending on climate, culture, and lifestyle.

Central Europeans created trouser-like articles with natural materials like leather and fur. These were wrapped around the legs and held up by belts, providing a more protective layer than the short-lived materials originally used, like fig leaves and cloth.

In ancient civilisations like Greece and Rome, people wore tunics and robes; Ancient Greeks considered trousers ridiculous, while Ancient Romans considered trouser-wearers barbaric.

Cultures like Egypt and Scotland saw people adopt skirts and kilts. While in warmer climates across the globe, loincloths were common attire. These were simple pieces of fabric worn around the waist and between the legs and were particularly prevalent in ancient civilisations like those in India, Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia.

British men also wore tunics before trousers. However, breeches emerged as a prevalent choice among men of higher social classes in the early modern period. These were often made from luxurious fabrics and featured intricate embellishments, quickly becoming a distinct symbol of affluence and status.

Gradually, trousers in Britain became firmly established with the evolution of formal and semi-formal day attire. These trousers, characterised by tailored cuts, refined fabrics, and meticulous detailing, were adopted throughout society – except by the clergy, who have continued to wear flowing robes to this day.

From the mid-twentieth century onwards, women also began to wear trousers, marking a significant stride towards gender equality in fashion and challenging traditional norms surrounding women's attire.

Different trousers through the decades

Trousers, as we know them today, evolved from riding breeches and have dramatically evolved throughout the ages and decades, becoming high-quality, stylish garments ideal for every occasion and activity. Join us as we explore the history of trousers through the decades!

Medieval breeches

The origins of trousers as we know them today can be traced back to riding breeches, worn by horse-riding cultures in the medieval period. These early trousers were often loose-fitting and allowed for ease of movement, catering to the practical needs of nomadic societies.

Trousers evolution through the early ages:

  • 14th-17th century: During the Renaissance, breeches became a fashionable garment for men in Europe. They were snug-fitting and typically ended just below the knee, evolving from practicality to a symbol of status and style.
  • 18th century: Knee-length breeches paired with long stockings continued to be popular.
  • Early 19th century: During the Regency and Victorian Era, trousers began to lengthen, evolving into high-waisted and snug-fitting trousers. As the century progressed, trousers became a standard part of men's daily attire.

20th-century trousers:

By the 20th century, trousers began to be designed with style in mind more than practicality, reflecting the changing fashion trends, societal shifts and cultural revolutions that defined each era:

  • The 1920s, ‘The Jazz Age’: The "flapper" style of the 1920s brought about a more relaxed fit in trousers, reflecting the newfound freedom of the era.
  • The 1930s, wide-legged trousers: The 1930s saw the introduction of wide-legged trousers, often paired with suspenders. This style persisted into the 1940s.
  • The 1950s, ‘The Golden Age of Denim’: Jeans, particularly associated with rebellious youth culture, gained popularity in the 1950s. Icons like James Dean helped establish denim trousers as a symbol of cool and nonconformity.
  • The 1960s, slim fit and bell bottoms: Slim-fit trousers became fashionable in the 1960s, reflecting the mod aesthetic. Bell bottoms emerged towards the end of the decade.
  • The 1970s, ‘Disco Flair’: Flared trousers dominated the disco era, with exaggerated wide legs and bold patterns.
  • The 1980s, ‘Power Dressing’: Tailored and high-waisted trousers were symbolic of power dressing in the 1980s. Women embraced trousers as a part of professional attire.
  • The 1990s, ‘Casual Chic’: The 1990s introduced a more casual approach to trousers. Cargo pants, chinos, and wide-legged jeans were popular choices.
